Portuguese Consul in New Bedford, Mass., Bids Farewell

NEW BEDFORD, MASS. - The "Consul of the People," known for her kind candor and approachable style, is leaving her post. But the friendships, memories and the special connection she made with the South Coast and vice versa will remain.      New Bedford's Portuguese Consul Fernanda Coelho is returning to Portugal in August after completing her four-year post in the Whaling City.       Originally from the seafaring city of Póvoa de Varzim in northern Portugal, she felt as if she had come home in New Bedford after serving for five years in the landlocked Portuguese Embassy in Brazil.      "Meeting the community solidified the belief that I hadn't come to the United States, but rather gone back to Portugal," said Coelho. "It's difficult not to feel comfortable here."      And her comfort level with the community grew as she initially began meeting with the community.      "I tried to make a serene and cautious approach because above all I wanted to respect the people and the history of the institutions that have been here for many years," said Coelho. "But there was such a great empathy, that I never felt reservations from anyone."      Fernando Garcia, businessman and recipient of the honor of the Prince Henry the Navigator, said that he shared the same sentiments that others do in the community, calling the consul the "most warm, caring, passionate person, both personally and professionally."      "It breaks my heart that she is leaving us. We have never had such a caring and loving relation with a public official," said Garcia. "She is brilliant - a true first class diplomat at heart - one that truly remembers her basic roots and the people and purposes that she is representing... the culture, traditions, the pride and everything that has to do with the Portuguese people in a foreign land."      "I get very emotional, I'm going to cry when she goes. The community has yet to realize the loss we are going to face," added Garcia.      João Pacheco, member of the Council for the Portuguese communities, an advisory board to the Portuguese government pertaining to immigration issues, said that the diplomat will leave her mark in the SouthCoast.      "She did an excellent job and is a woman who represented all social classes of our community," said Pacheco. "The relation that the community had with Portugal through her was excellent. What marked me the most was her simple personality. She was open to the community without any superiority complex. She was honest, steadfast and treated everyone equally."      Coelho said there where many events and emotions during her tenure, felt by her and her staff. From the possibility of the Portuguese foreign ministry closing the Consulate to various state visits,which included the Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva in 2007, to the tragedy of the Holy Ghost fire in Fall River and the loss of life of Portuguese fishermen.      She said that she felt a great deal of support from local political institutions at the time that the community needed it the most.      "The strongest sensation that I will take with me is that the community, which is well integrated, respects their cultural legacy a great deal and is very proud of its roots... it has definitely won the respect of American authorities," said Coelho.      New Bedford's state Representative Antonio F.D. Cabral said that she was someone who was wonderful and easy to work with.      "She really understands the community and really is out there to have the community respected and be represented at every level possible," said Coelho. "She is accessible to the community at large and has a good relationship with the various elected officials in the area and that is important."      U.S. Rep. Barney Frank's assistant, Ines Gonçalves-Drolet, whose office is a block away from the consulate, said that Coelho was "one of the most special consuls we [have] had."

"She is very approachable and very dear to this community; we really hate to see her go," said Gonçalves-Drolet. "It's prestigious having the consulate in New Bedford, and its necessary because we have a huge Portuguese community here that still has a lot of ties to Portugal. It was really a pleasure seeing her represent Portugal the way she did."      Last night, Coelho and her husband Luís Bernardo took the opportunity to say good-bye to the community at a reception held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, honoring the director general for consular affairs and Portuguese communities, Ambassador José Arsénio.      Coelho said that her replacement, Graça Fonseca, will achieve her first post as consul in New Bedford.      She added that it will be hard for her to forget the people she met here and that she will have a special connection with the region as her younger daughter was born here.       Her message to the community was to continue their dual effort of integration to the American society through active participation, while at the same time maintaining their immense pride and original cultural traditions.      "I sought to be as close as possible to the people, to listen, to observe and to relate to everyone," she said. "I tried to be at the same level of any Portuguese citizen or American that needed consular services. I tried to be as human as possible."

'Cônsul do Povo' diz adeus

NEW BEDFORD - A cônsul do povo, conhecida pelo seu estilo acessível e simpático está prestes a deixar o seu posto - mas as amizades, memória e a ligação especial a SouthCoast e vice-versa irá permanecer.      A Cônsul de Portugal em New Bedford, Fernanda Coelho, irá regressar a Portugal em Agosto depois de ter completado quatro anos no seu posto.      Originalmente da cidade piscatória de Povoa de Varzim, e depois de servir cinco anos na embaixada de Portugal no Brasil, ela sentiu como se tivesse regressado a casa em New Bedford.      "O convívio com a comunidade fez-me sentir a convicção que não tinha vindo para os Estados Unidos mas tinha regressado a Portugal," disse Coelho. "É difícil uma pessoa não se sentir confortável aqui."      E o seu nível de conforto foi crescendo ao conhecer a comunidade.      "Tentei fazer uma aproximação serena e cautelosa porque acima de tudo queria respeitar as pessoas, a história das instituições que já aqui estão há muitos anos," disse Coelho. "Mas apesar de tudo houve uma empatia muito grande, nunca senti reservas de parte de ninguém."      Fernando Garcia, empresário e Comendador da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, disse que ele e a comunidade partilhavam os mesmos sentimentos achando a cônsul "a mais simpática e atenciosa pessoa, tanto pessoal como profissionalmente."       "Ela ao deixar-nos está a quebrar o meu coração. Nunca tivemos uma relação tão atenciosa com uma autoridade pública," disse Garcia. "Ela é brilhante. Uma diplomata de primeira classe. Uma que se lembra das suas raízes e das pessoas e objectivos que representa. A cultura, as tradições, o orgulho, tudo o que é relacionado com as pessoas portuguesas numa terra estrangeira."      "A comunidade ainda não percebeu a falta que iremos encontrar," disse Garcia.      João Pacheco, membro do Conselho das Comunidades Portuguesas disse que a diplomata ira deixar a sua marca na SouthCoast.      "Ela fez um trabalho excelente, e é uma mulher que representa todas as classes sociais da comunidade," disse Pacheco. "A relação com a comunidade e Portugal através dela foi excelente. O que mais marca da sua presença, a maneira simples a personalidade, simples para com todos na comunidade, sem complexos de superioridade. Tratou todos de igual com muita honestidade e firmeza."      Coelho disse que houve muitos eventos e emoções sentidos por ela e pelo consulado. Desde a possibilidade do consulado fechar, às várias visitas de estado que incluíram o Presidente Cavaco Silva em 2007, a tragédia do fogo do Espírito Santo em Fall River a perca de vida de pescadores portugueses.      Ela disse que sentiu um grande apoio por parte das instituições políticas locais durante os períodos que a comunidade os necessitava.      "A sensação mais forte que levo comigo é que esta comunidade para além de estar muito integrada, respeita muito a sua herança cultural e tem muito orgulho das suas raízes, ganhou definitivamente o respeito das autoridades americanas," disse Coelho.      O representante estatal de New Bedford Antonio F.D. Cabral, disse que ela era admirável e agradável com quem trabalha.      "Ela realmente percebe a comunidade e realmente está disponível para que a comunidade seja representada a todos os níveis possíveis," disse Cabral. "Ela é acessível a toda a comunidade e tem boas relações com todos os políticos nesta área o que é importante."       A assistente do Cong. Barney Frank, Inês Gonçalves-Drole, disse que Coelho é "uma cônsul das mais especiais que tivemos."      "Ela é muito acessível e muito querida desta comunidade, realmente vamos estar tristes com a sua saída," disse Gonçalves-Drolet. "É um prestígio ter o consulado aqui em New Bedford e é necessário pois temos uma extensa comunidade Portuguesa aqui com muitas ligações a Portugal. Foi realmente um prazer a ver representar Portugal."      Ontem à noite, Coelho e o seu marido Luís Bernardo tiveram a oportunidade para dizer adeus à comunidade numa recepção realizada no Whaling Museum de New Bedford, em honra do Director-Geral dos Assuntos Consulares e Comunidades Portuguesas, Embaixador José Manuel da Costa Arsénio.      Coelho disse que para a futura Cônsul Graça Fonseca, New Bedford irá ser também o seu primeiro posto consular.      Ela acrescentou que ira ser difícil esquecer as pessoas que encontrou aqui e que terá uma ligação especial à região pois a sua filha mais nova nasceu cá.      A sua mensagem para a comunidade foi para continuarem o seu duplo esforço de integração e de vivência das suas tradições de origem, da participação activa no país onde estão inseridos sem nunca esquecer do orgulho imenso pela a sua história e pela sua cultura e raízes.      "Procurei, estar próxima das pessoas e estar aberta, ouvir, observar e relacionar o mais naturalmente possível com toda a gente. Tentei estar ao nível de qualquer cidadão português ou americano que precisasse dos serviços consulares... procurei ser o mais humana possível," disse Coelho.
