Latino Immigrant Community Urges the Obama

Administration and Congressional Leaders to Swiftly Enact

Sensible and Humane Immigration Reform

Chicago, Ill.  The National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC) commends President Obama for convening a meeting with Congressional leaders on June 25, 2009, to begin tackling immigration reform.

NALACC also urges the President and the U.S. Congress to swiftly enact sensible and humane immigration reform.

“We commend President Obama and Congressional Leaders for taking up the daunting challenge of fixing a system that is woefully broken, unjust and immoral”, stated Oscar Chacón, NALACC’s executive director.

NALACC, in conjunction with a broad spectrum of advocacy and immigrant-led organizations, has sent a letter to President Obama urging him to act both swiftly and thoughtfully.

“In our view, it is critical that the U.S. Congress enact immigration reform soon and that they do it well,” stated Angela Sanbrano, NALACC’s president. 

“We do not want additional anti-family measures, but real changes that expedite the processing of legal permanent residency and citizenship applications, restore due process for immigrants in deportation proceedings...,” added Ms. Sanbrano.

“We are a blessing to this country,” stated Jose Luis Gutierrez, treasurer of the NALACC executive committee.  “We...have contributed with our work, our taxes, our family values and our culture...” added Mr. Gutierrez.

NALACC acknowledges that comprehensive immigration reform may not be feasible in today’s political context due to a packed legislative agenda.

“If comprehensive immigration reform that truly fixes the moral brokenness of our current system is not possible this year, we urge the Obama Administration to use its executive authority to put an immediate end to raids and to the cooperative agreements between immigration agents and local police departments,” stated Chacón.

“We also urge the U.S. Congress to enact limited-scope legislation such as the DREAM Act and AgJOBS, which, if approved, would contribute towards achieving an immigration policy that is sensible and humane,” concluded Mr. Chacón.

NALACC (nalacc.org) is a network of immigrant-led organizations working to improve the quality of life in their communities, in the United States, as well as in their countries of origin.

Comunidad Inmigrante Latinoamericana Insta al Presidente Obama y al Congreso a que Apruebe Una Reforma Migratoria Justa y Sensata

Chicago, Ill. La Alianza Nacional de Comunidades Latinoamericanas y Caribeñas (NALACC en sus siglas en ingles), felicita al Presidente Obama por convocar una reunión con líderes del Congreso el día 25 de junio. NALACC también insta al Presidente y al Congreso a que actúen con prontitud en la aprobación de una reforma migratoria.

“Felicitamos al Presidente Obama y a Lideres del Congreso por abordar un tema tan complejo y espinoso como es el de componer un sistema que es injusto y en completa bancarrota moral” dijo Oscar Chacón, Director Ejecutivo de NALACC. “Al mismo tiempo, nos preocupa que vaya a proponer una propuesta que lejos de reformar la naturaleza despilfarradora de recursos y engendradora de sufrimiento humano en familias inmigrantes, quiera ampliar estos preceptos” añadió Chacón.

NALACC, junto con una gama amplia de organizaciones que abogan por los derechos de la comunidad inmigrante, ha enviado una carta al Presidente Obama pidiéndole que actúe con prontitud y sensatez. “En nuestra opinión, es de suma importante que la reforma migratoria se haga pronto y que se haga bien”, dijo Ángela Sanbrano, Presidente de NALACC. “No queremos más medidas anti familias si no que cambios reales que incluyan un programa ágil y económicamente accesible de residencia permanente para las personas a quienes la obsoleta ley actual les ha forzado a vivir sin papeles en los EE.UU.,” añadió Sanbrano.

“Somos una bendición para este país”, dijo José Luis Gutiérrez, Tesorero del Comité Ejecutivo de NALACC. “Merecemos ser parte plena de esta sociedad porque trabajamos, pagamos impuestos y contribuimos a este país con nuestros valores de familia y nuestra cultura. Nos preocupa que el proceso de hacernos miembros plenos de la sociedad, es decir ciudadanos de los EE.UU., se vaya a frustrar por medio de procesos legales largos y espinosos, o con permisos temporales de trabajo que no protegerán plenamente nuestros derechos,” añadió Gutiérrez.

NALACC reconoce que la realidad política actual hace difícil que todo esto sea alcanzable en el contexto actual. “Si no es posible este año conseguir una reforma integral a la ley migratoria que verdaderamente repare la profundamente rota ley actual, como mínimo le exigimos al Presidente Obama que ocupe su autoridad ejecutiva para ordenar un paro inmediato a las redadas y a la colaboración entre agentes de inmigración y los departamentos de policía locales,” declaro Chacón. “Exigimos también que el Congreso apruebe propuestas de alcance limitado tales como la DREAM Act y la AgJOBS, las cuales de ser aprobadas abonarían el camino hacia una ley migratoria sensata y humana,” concluyo Chacón.
