Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA Foundation Announces Resignation of President Jarrett T. Barrios

JUNE 17, 2009 — Today the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation announced the resignation of Jarrett T. Barrios as president of the Foundation. Barrios will leave the Foundation in September to become president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, a New York- and Los Angeles-based not-for profit organization that works for the full equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people through media advocacy.

Barrios was named president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation in 2007. Under his leadership, the Foundation launched Care Beyond Coverage, a multi-year policy initiative to identify non-insurance related barriers to health care access, and the Community Partnerships Leaders Program, a seminar series for emerging leaders working in health access.

“Jarrett has been a strong leader for the Foundation in this transition period from the enactment of health care reform in 2006 to the present where we continue to work to find ways to expand access to health care for the Commonwealth’s low-income and vulnerable populations,” said Philip W. Johnston, chairman of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation Board of Directors.

Re: Health Foundation President Jarret Barrios Resigns

The Foundation believes systemic change resulting in expanded access to health care is possible through targeted grantmaking, policy research, and public education. Through its grantmaking, the Foundation seeks to leverage the success of community organizations devoted to expanding access to care and reducing barriers to services by funding successful community models and encouraging innovative program development. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation is making a stir.

Health Care...

In the emerging field of green medicine, the relationship between the environment, medicine and human health is linked to improve health care while protecting scarce environmental and medical resources. Strategies and leadership are necessary to change environmental and medical practices. The term "green" is on everyone's minds these days, whether it's getting more green as in making more money, or going green environmentally. The need for more green technology and practices is definitive, as the impact on our environment from our appetites for fossil fuel machinery and methods of generation electricity have taken a toll. An effort does have to be made to repair our planet, but many consider the loss of amenities to be too great to surmount. However, there are ways of gettingby: solar water heating devices, electric high speed trains getting installed for public transport, and so forth. If you start going a little more green, it's like giving a cash advance to the Earth.
