Rhode Island-based University Launches Law Internship in Portugal

BRISTOL, RI - One lucky law student will spend the summer riffling through Portuguese briefs in a major firm in Lisbon.
      
Roger Williams University School of Law recently announced the launch of a summer internship for select students.
      
Professor David A. Rice, director of the law school's Portuguese-American Comparative Law Center, said the reaction to the announcement was almost instantaneous.
      
"Within two hours I had three different people come into the office asking 'when can I apply?''' said Rice. "That's a strong reaction.''
      
The center has a strong connection with the Universidade Catolica (UC), which hosts the RWU's Lisbon Summer Program. Each year, about 20 students enroll in the summer program.
     
"The students that have been in our study-abroad program come back so enthusiastic about it and curious about the law and practices (in Portugal)," said Rice. "It struck me that we have an opportunity (through the internship) that it will be good for the students, for the law school and for the law firm."
      
Rice secured an internship spot for a RWU student with Sérvulo & Associados, a 60-lawyer firm known for its expertise in government contracts, public law and economic crime.
      
That spot was developed through a connection with a managing partner in the firm, who is a former dean of the law school of the UC.
      
"Students aren't going to be studying Portuguese law," said Rice. "It's a practice internship in which they will be working alongside Portuguese lawyers."
      
Rice is also working on securing future internship positions in three other major Portuguese law firms.
      
For him, the firms have the potential for long-term return that exceeds the costs of having an intern for two months. The firm has now a solid contact in the United States.
      
"Personally, connections do really count, so much depends on how you relate with people," said Rice.
      
The Center was founded in 1999 when RWU signed a cooperation protocol with the Portuguese Ministry of Justice, the Office of the Attorney General of Portugal and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD).
      
"This speaks to FLAD, saying that we are doing something that it is not just an idea, but results by creating engagement," said Rice.
      
The application is open to students who will have completed two of their three years of law studies. The successful applicant will receive stipends for transportation, lodging and other expenses.
      
Portuguese-language fluency or knowledge is not required, but a commitment to learning basic Portuguese is essential.

Faculdade de Direito da Roger Williams University Lança Programa de Estágio em Portugal

BRISTOL - Um estudante com sorte irá passar o Verão atarefado com documentos jurídicos, num escritório de advogados em Lisboa.
      
A Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Roger Williams anunciou recentemente o programa de estágio de Verão.
      
O Professor David A. Rice, director do Centro Luso-Americano de Direito Comparado, disse que a reacção ao anúncio foi quase imediata.
      
"Passadas duas horas, entraram no meu gabinete três pessoas a perguntar 'quando é que eu posso inscrever,''' disse Rice. "Foi uma boa reacção."
      
O centro tem boas relações com a Universidade Católica, que recebe de Verão o programa de estudos da RWU. Cada ano, perto de 20 estudantes matriculam-se para estudar em Lisboa.
      
"Os estudantes que tiveram no programa de estudos de fora do país, voltam com muito entusiasmo e com curiosidade sobre a lei e o exercício dela em Portugal," disse Rice. "Pensei que houvesse uma oportunidade aí e que seria bom para os estudantes, para a faculdade e para as firmas de advocacia."
      
Rice assegurou um estágio para um aluno da RWU com Sérvulo & Associados, uma firma com 60 advogados, conhecida pelo seu trabalho de contratos governamentais, lei pública e crime económico.
      
Essa posição foi desenvolvida através de uma ligação com um sócio da firma, que é o antigo reitor da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica.
      
"Os estudantes não vão estudar lei portuguesa," disse Rive. "É um estágio profissional, no qual irão trabalhar de lado a lado com advogados portugueses."
      
Rice disse que está a tentar garantir mais estágios em outros escritórios de advocacia em Portugal.
      
Para ele, os escritórios tem a potencialidade de receber benefícios a longo termo, que excedem os custos de receberem um estagiário por dois meses. O escritório garante um contacto sólido nos Estados Unidos.
      
"Ligações pessoais realmente contam, há tanto que depende na maneira de se relacionar com pessoas," disse Rice.
      
O centro foi fundado em 1999 quando a RWU assinou um protocolo de cooperação com o Ministério da Justiça da República Portuguesa, a Procuradoria-Geral da República e a Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento(FLAD).
      
"Isto fala à FLAD, pois diz que estamos a fazer algo que não é só uma ideia, mas tem resultados ao criar ligações," disse Rice.
