Portuguese Mayor of Fall River Honored with School Named After Him

FALL RIVER, Mass. - Despite his humble beginnings in the Columbia Street neighborhood, Carlton M. Viveiros is perhaps the first Portuguese-American to "cross the hill" and rise to a distinguished career of public service at legislative, executive and judicial levels.

On Wednesday [Sept. 19, 2008], Fall River recognized the achievements of its long-serving former mayor, naming the new elementary school at 525 Slade St. after him.

"Honored as I am to have my name associated with this edifice, I am acutely aware that neither this day nor this structure is about me," Viveiros said. "Today is all about the students, the kids who will ply the classrooms and hallways of this beautiful building today, tomorrow and for generations to come."

Attorney James Clarkin, who served as master of ceremonies for the event, recalled Viveiros as a young person who "started down the hill" in the shadows of the Doran School, Duke's Variety Store, the Santo Christo Church and the Silver Dollar Café. "He was among the first to peer above the top of Columbia Street and gain entrance to the broader world" where he gained "acceptance and respect."

Although Viveiros had to quit school at an early age due to "family commitments," he returned to his studies as an adult and eventually entered a lifetime career of public service.

From 1971 to 1978, he represented the South End in the House of Representatives. He then served seven terms as Fall River mayor. In 1990, he became the first Clerk Magistrate of the Southeastern Massachusetts Housing Court, where he served until his retirement in 2005.

"101 Columbia St., a five-family house that did not have hot water, that's where it all started," he told O Jornal, speaking candidly about his humble beginnings. "We would take out the tub. My father would warm up the water. I was the youngest of three and the last one to go in the tub. You know what kind of water I got."

Despite his modesty, he could not help but show his pride and joy at the dedication ceremony. About 250 people of all walks of life had come out to honor him, including countless present and former city, state and judicial officials. Many of them stressed how great of a role model he is for all school children.

"This experience is surreal - to be put in this position" he told O Jornal. "I just did what I felt was right. I am honored to be considered a role model, but it is not a tag I would place on myself."

Viveiros was surrounded by several family members at the dedication.

"This crystallizes everything. I am very proud of him," said his son, Keith A. Viveiros, noting that as a father Viveiros was "a disciplinarian with a soft hand who always stressed how important education was."

His [other] son, Kerry, recalled how Viveiros was always someone who "set by example" and was never a 'big talker."

"I am very proud of him," he said. "It is always surprising the level of appreciation and respect he receives from his peers."

His granddaughter, Allyson Fagan, described the school dedication as a "good testament of his work and career."

Mayor Robert Correia, who also serves as chairman of the School Committee, explained why he asked fellow committee members to consider naming the school after Viveiros.

"He set a standard that others can emulate," said Correia, referring to the fact that even though Viveiros quit school at an early age, he found the "courage to go back, get his GED and not be ashamed of it."

"He recognized his flaws and pursued to mitigate them...and pursued a better life for him and other people," Correia said. The standard Viveiros set is one "I hope not only these children can live by, but by the grace of God, I can live by."

For Superintendent Nicholas A. Fischer, Viveiros is the embodiment of a lifelong learner.

"People can learn at any time of their lives,¨ he said. "I hope children here take that into their own."

State Senator Joan A. Menard, who met Viveiros at the age of 14, said he was "an inspiration."

The new Carlton M. Viveiros Elementary School principal, Kristen Farias, said the children and staff are very excited and proud to be the first to "live, to work and to play" in the new school.

"We have the opportunity to develop the minds, imagination and creativity of the next generation," said Farias. "They'll have the state of the art technology, warmth and access to resources and technology to be successful in the 21st century."

She said the school has chosen a wizard as its mascot because not only it is a figure adored by many children, it is a symbol "of the endless possibilities and magic that can happen under this roof."

FALL RIVER, Mass. - Apesar das suas origens bastante humildes na vizinhança da Columbia Street, Carlton M. Viveiros foi talvez o primeiro luso-americano a "transpor a colina" e a ascender numa carreira notável em serviço público, aos níveis legislativo, executivo e judicial.

Na quarta-feira, Fall River reconheceu os feitos do ex-mayor que mais tempo presidiu à sua Câmara Municipal, baptizando a nova escola primária em 525 Slade Street com o seu nome.

"Apesar de me sentir muito honrado pelo meu nome estar associado a este edifício, estou extremamente consciente que nem este dia nem esta estrutura são acerca de mim," disse Viveiros. "Hoje, é tudo acerca dos estudantes, as crianças que usarão as salas de aula e corredores desde lindo edifício, hoje amanhã e em gerações vindouras."

O advogado James Clarkin, que serviu de mestre de cerimónias do evento, recordou como o jovem Viveiros "começou ao fundo da colina," à sombra da Doran School, Duke's Variety Store, Igreja de Santo Christo e Silver Dollar Café.

"Ele foi um dos primeiros a espreitar por cima da Columbia Street e ganhar entrada num mundo mais alargado" onde conquistou "aceitação e respeito."

Embora Viveiros tivesse abandonado a escola muito cedo devido a "compromissos familiares," regressou aos estudos já adulto e, eventualmente, enveredou por uma longa carreira de serviço público. Entre 1971 e 1978, foi membro da Câmara de Representantes em Boston. Depois foi mayor de Fall River durante sete mandatos. Em 1990, tornou-se o primeiro "Clerk Magistrate" da Southeastern Massachusetts Housing Court. Reformou-se em 2005.

"101 Columbia St., uma casa de cinco famílias sem água quente, foi onde tudo começou," disse Viveiros a O Jornal, falando candidamente sobre as suas origens modestas. "Tirávamos a banheira do armário. O meu pai aquecia a água. Eu era o mais novo de três filhos e o último a tomar banho. Sabe que tipo de água eu tinha."

Apesar da sua modéstia, Viveiros não conseguia esconder o orgulho e alegria que sentia durante a cerimónia de inauguração da escola. Cerca de 250 pessoas, de todos os estratos sociais, tinham-se juntado para o homenagear, incluindo inúmeras entidades municipais, estatais e judiciais, presentes e passadas. Muitas delas sublinharam como Viveiros pode servir de "exemplo" para todos os alunos.

"Esta experiência é surrealista - ser colocado nesta posição," disse a O Jornal. "Eu apenas fiz o que senti ser certo. Sinto-me honrado por ser considerado como exemplo a seguir, mas não seria um rótulo que colocaria em mim próprio."

Durante a cerimónia, Viveiros estava ladeado por vários familiares.

"Isto cristaliza tudo. Orgulho-me muito dele," disse o filho Keith, que acrescentou que o antigo mayor, como pai, era "um disciplinador com mão leve, que sempre sublinhou a importância de se estudar."

O filho Kerry, por sua vez, lembrou como Viveiros foi sempre alguém que "deu o exemplo" e nunca foi "muito falador."

"Sinto muito orgulho nele," referiu. "É sempre surpreendente ver o nível de apreciação e respeito que recebe dos seus colegas."

Para a neta Allyson Fagan, baptizar a escola com o seu nome foi "um bom testemunho do seu trabalho e carreira."

O nome da nova escola foi proposto pelo actual mayor de Fall River, Robert Correia, que também preside à Comissão Escolar. Durante a cerimónia, Correia explicou porque fez a sugestão.

"Ele estabeleceu um modelo a seguir, que pode ser emulado por outros," frisou Correia, referindo-se ao facto de Viveiros ter abandonado a escola ainda novo, mas ter encontrado "coragem para regressar, obter o seu GED (equivalência liceal) e de não se envergonhar disso."

"Ele reconheceu as suas falhas e procurou mitigá-las... e tentar obter uma vida melhor para ele e para outras pessoas," frisou Correia. O padrão que ele estabeleceu é um que "eu espero que não só estas crianças possam seguir, mas que eu, com a graça de Deus, possa também seguir."

 A directora da escola, Kristen Farias, salientou que as crianças e corpo docente sentem-se muito felizes e orgulhosos por serem os primeiros "a trabalhar e brincar" nas novas instalações.

"Temos a oportunidade de desenvolver as mentes, imaginação e criatividade da próxima geração," referiu. "Elas [crianças] contarão com tecnologia ultra-moderna, calor humano e acesso a recursos, para que sejam bem sucedidas no séc. XXI."

A directora informou que a escola escolheu um mago para mascote porque a figura não só é adorada por muitas crianças como serve de símbolo das "infinitas possibilidades e magia que poderão vir a acontecer sob este tecto."
